Last week my brother-in-law, Stan, retired from the California Highway Patrol after 27 years on the force.
This is a remarkable feat.27 years doing anything is kind of nuts, but dealing with traffic, terrible drivers, and horrific accidents is particularly noteworthy.
However, what's more remarkable is how little fanfare Stan requires in this or any other area of his life. He has been quietly contemplating the move for months, but on Tuesday he decided that Wednesday would be his last day.
He didn't end in a huff, and he certainly didn't require any ceremony; he simply did what he felt was right. He was ready for new challenges. He had finished growing in his current job. It was time to move on, so away he went.
Given my propensity to talk AD NAUSEAM about everything, I don't understand Stan's quiet behavior, but I love it.
In fact, Stan's approach to life is admirable in so many ways. Not only is he faithful, he's fun.
Stan is a family guy, entirely devoted to his team and relentlessly proud of them.He's dragged his kids across the country to sporting events.And makes sure everyone gets some individual time.However, what's impressed me most is how well this man loves my sister Amy. Stan is Amy's biggest fan and supporter (narrowly edging out me and my parents), and she has only ever talked about how good he is to her.
I wish the qualities in their marriage on everyone I know.In a tear-jerking display of affection and in honor of Stan's move, Amy made the video below. It captures the tone of this wonderful decision. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
