Forget Identity Crisis

“To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan and not quite enough time.” Leonard Bernstein

I'm so excited for you to check out this TED talk because Meg Jay has some real gems in store for you.

I particularly love her idea of ignoring any said "identity crisis" and instead shifting your focus to building "identity capital." This fabulous term is new for me, and Ms. Jay defines Identity Capital as something which adds value to your life or serves as an investment of who you want to be.

This means working on your marriage before you have one (Recall THIS book on the same topic), picking your family, and recognizing how your "urban tribe" is overrated.

The 14 minutes is worth your time, but if you're in a rush, jump ahead to minute 8 and listen to the story of "Emma."

Clinical psychologist Meg Jay has a bold message for twentysomethings: Contrary to popular belief, your 20s are not a throwaway decade. In this provocative talk, Jay says that just because marriage, work and kids are happening later in life, doesn't mean you can't start planning now.

"Don't be defined by what you didn't know or didn't do. You're deciding your life right now."

Sage advice indeed.
